During the twentieth century, the development of counseling and psychotherapy came to be
organized around a number of distinct theoretical models or ‘approaches’. Historically, the most
important of these approaches or ‘schools’ of therapy have been psychodynamic, cognitive–
behavioural and humanistic school of thought in counseling.
